There is also the option of going to the town office and researching personal property records but only after the property has been sold and the deed recorded.  Many town offices have records of the sale of homes for tax purposes and allow you to do this search yourself.  Many states have a Real Estate Transfer Tax and a copy of this form is mailed to the town or city hall after the sale of the home.    

 

Another valuable resource is the internet.  Most county governments offer their residents online access to public records such as personal property records.  You can usually search information such as the owner’s names, date of last sale, the sale price, and property taxes for the home online.  Usually the only information that you need is the property address.
